Shari Gross Shares Development Strategies for the Food Co-op Sector and her Personal Journey with Erie Food Co-op

This week’s episode will features Shari Gross, member/ owner of the Erie Food Co-op. Vernon and Shari will discuss development strategies for food co-ops, and her personal cooperative journey.

Shari Gross, a lifelong Erie, Pennsylvania resident, has been a member/ owner of the Erie Food Co-op since 1985 and served over 16 years on its board—most as President. Under her leadership, the Co-op hired a dynamic GM/CEO, experimented with a food truck, implemented a patronage dividend policy, overhauled its governance manual, and supported expansion efforts.

Shari holds a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from Penn West University and has built a career in mental health, nonprofit, and government administration. She currently directs a psychiatric treatment facility for youth. Her interests include trauma-informed care, values-based leadership, and organizational governance.

Outside of work, she enjoys yoga, writing fiction, and music. She lives in Erie with her wife and three cats.

Our host, Vernon Oakes, is a consummate advocate for cooperatives. He is a Past President of the National Association of Housing Cooperatives, and he’s served on several boards and committees to advance the interests of cooperatives. Recently, he served on the Limited Equity Cooperative Task Force, established by Anita Bonds, At-Large Member of the Council of the District of Columbia. Vernon is an MBA graduate of Stanford University, who has used his business acumen to benefit the community, by promoting the added value of the cooperative business model.
