Mike Houston discusses the Reopening of the Takoma Park Silver Spring Food Co-op

The upcoming episode will feature an interview with Mike Houston, General Manager of the Takoma Park Silver Spring Food Co-op (TPSS). Vernon and Mike will explore the TPSS’s reopening after an extensive remodeling project.

Mike Houston boasts 14 years of experience in the natural food industry, overseeing independently owned community stores. He is an alumnus of Leadership Montgomery’s Emerging Leaders program and currently chairs the Montgomery County Food Council. Additionally, Mike is a member of the National Cooperative Grocer’s Advocacy Advisory Committee, the Member Advisory Committee, and the Old Takoma Business Association Board. He earned his B.S. from the University of Missouri’s College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources.

The Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op open its doors in 1981 and has been in its present location in the Takoma Junction since 1998. As a community owned grocery store, the co-op offers healthy, natural, organic, and locally sourced food to its over 11,000 member-owners, and anyone who wants to make a purchase. All are welcome.

Our host, Vernon Oakes, is a consummate advocate for cooperatives. He is a Past President of the National Association of Housing Cooperatives, and he’s served on several boards and committees to advance the interests of cooperatives. Recently, he served on the Limited Equity Cooperative Task Force, established by Anita Bonds, At-Large Member of the Council of the District of Columbia. Vernon is an MBA graduate of Stanford University, who has used his business acumen to benefit the community, by promoting the added value of the cooperative business model.
