John Holdsclaw IV, President/CEO of Rochdale Capital Explores Challenges & Opportunities of Financing Co-ops & Shares New Initiatives

This week, Vernon Oakes will be joined by John Holdsclaw IV, President and CEO of Rochdale Capital. They’ll explore the challenges and opportunities in financing cooperatives and highlight new initiatives from Rochdale Capital.

John Holdsclaw IV is the president and CEO of Rochdale Capital, a national non-profit community development loan fund that promotes cooperative principles and community ownership. The organization provides financing and technical assistance to community-based organizations and cooperatives, with a focus on under-resourced communities, particularly those owned by women and minorities.

In addition, John serves as the executive vice president and chief policy officer at the National Cooperative Bank (NCB), where he establishes NCB as a thought leader in public policy, community development finance, and cooperative expansion. NCB partners strategically with Rochdale Capital.

Mr. Holdsclaw is a board member of several organizations, including the Cooperative Development Foundation, the CDFI Coalition, the Opportunity Finance Network, the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, and the Executive Advisory Board of the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCATSU) Center of Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEE&I).

In 2019, John received NCB’s Stanley W. Dreyer Spirit of Cooperation Award, recognizing individuals who embody the spirit of cooperative principles. He was also named one of ImpactAlpha’s Agents of Impact for 2022, one of twelve individuals recognized for driving positive social and environmental impact. Additionally, John is an active financial member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Our host, Vernon Oakes, is a consummate advocate for cooperatives. He is a Past President of the National Association of Housing Cooperatives, and he’s served on several boards and committees to advance the interests of cooperatives. Recently, he served on the Limited Equity Cooperative Task Force, established by Anita Bonds, At-Large Member of the Council of the District of Columbia. Vernon is an MBA graduate of Stanford University, who has used his business acumen to benefit the community, by promoting the added value of the cooperative business model.
