This week Vernon interviews Alma Chislom, board member of the Boston Neighborhood Community Land Trust (BNCLT). Vernon and Alma will discuss the many different things she is Thankful for, as it relates to her housing.
Alma Chislom is a resident and board member of BNCLT. Her association with the land trust started when she lived in a home that was in foreclosure and in threat of being auctioned. With the help of other organizations, she was able to stay in her home and the property eventually went on to become a part of the land trust. It was that battle with the threat of displacement, that motivated her to get involved with her community and learn how she could help prevent what she experienced from happening to other families.
Ms. Chislom began her pursuit to address the injustices in housing by volunteering with organizations, participating in trainings, and working on various committees. There she learned how much work it takes to get affordable housing and help people stay in their homes. She is driven by her desire to ensure that people in her community never experience the devastation she experienced. She states, “It is my hope to give back to my community and those who have helped me and my family through organizing in my community to end displacement.”
