Vernon and Wayne discuss how he became involved in the cooperative movement, the value he sees in collaborative decision making, and how he has used cooperative principles as guideposts to overcome challenges in life, and expand the possibilities for his business. Wayne Swan has been self-employed for most of his career with intermittent employment in retail sales, retail store management and business-to-business sales. As a self-employed businessperson, he has been involved in managing a martial arts school, owning and operating an independent real estate brokerage, and an independent taxi driver. In 2005, Wayne returned to college and completed his bachelor’s degree in Business Information Systems (Accounting Information Systems concentration), graduating in May 2008. He worked on the implementation of SAP ERP (enterprise resource planning) system as an employee of Bearing Point, one of the world’s largest management and technology consulting firms at the time. When the Great Recession hit at the end of 2008, virtually all government contract work was halted and Bearing Point went under due to a billion dollars in bond debt. Ove the next couple of years, Wayne transitioned into professional accounting with a focus on taxation. Unfortunately, in 2011, Wayne was involved in a serious hit-and-run motorcycle crash. His subsequent disability and extended recovery caused him to focus his attention on tax and tax advisory services, which allows for extended periods of downtime after short periods of intense activity. In 2014, he and a friend started a company which has since evolved into the American Tax Cooperative Corporation. American Tax Cooperative Corporation is a virtualized tax and accounting firm serving clients throughout the United States.
