Vernon Oakes discusses the Role of Co-ops in Economic Recovery and Revitalization

This week Vernon discusses the role of Co-ops in economic recovery and revitalization.

Cooperatives are showing greater resilience than traditional enterprises amid the COVID-19 crisis, in the same way as employee-owned companies did in the U.S. during the Great Recession, producing COVID tests, masks and disinfectant, and directly meeting the needs of their workers and communities. In fact, the rapid conversion of many small businesses from capitalist firms to cooperatives provide an inspiring example of how we can face the COVID challenge with solidarity. As we seek to rebuild our economy, it has become clear that cooperatives provide a clear opportunity for businesses to survive this economic downturn. Vernon will have an open-mic discussion with the audience about the many ways cooperatives can be use to save this economy.

Our host, Vernon Oakes, is a consummate advocate for cooperatives. He is a Past President of the National Association of Housing Cooperatives, and has served on several boards and committees to advance the interests of cooperatives. Recently, he served on the Limited Equity Cooperative Task Force, established by Anita Bonds, At-Large Member of the Council of the District of Columbia. Vernon is an MBA graduate of Stanford University, who has used his business acumen to benefit the community, by promoting the added value of the cooperative business model.
