Pauline Green is the first woman President of the International Co-operative Alliance in its 117 year history. Elected in 2009 at the General Assembly, Pauline argued that the time is right for radical change in the priorities of the ICA. The ICA is the global organisation that represents, unites and campaigns on behalf of co-operatives across the world. In 2000 she became Chief Executive of Co-operatives UK, the apex body for co-ops in the UK. Appointed by the then Prime Minister Tony Blair to the Co-operative Commission, she then had the responsibility of implementing its recommendations to modernise the UK co-operative business sector. She was instrumental in unifying the movement in the UK, successfully lobbied for new co-op legislation, and was a key player in a wave of new co-operative development. She retired from Cooperatives UK in 2009 after nomination as President of the ICA. Pauline Green was appointed a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List 2002 for services to the development of the European Union and to the Co-operative Movement.
