Published On February 13, 2015 | Radio show, Trending

Dr. Nembhard is a political economist and professor of African American studies at the John Jay College of CUNY and author. Vernon and Dr. Nembhard discussed her book, Collective Courage, and her own journey of discovery of the rich, forgotten history of African American cooperation that she unveiled as she researched her book. Collective Courage makes a very strong case for the historical and continuing importance of cooperatives as a strategy for African American economic, social, and political development. In Collective Courage, Jessica Gordon Nembhard chronicles African American cooperative business ownership and its place in the movements for Black civil rights and economic equality. Dr. Nembhard’s current areas of interest include democratic community-based economic development, alternative urban development strategies, cooperative economics, race and economic inequality, wealth inequality, and popular economic literacy.
